Astrological Aspects: Witnessing Planetary Interactions

Published on: 16th April, 2026

Engaging with the theme of astrological aspects, the podcast episode provides a comprehensive exploration of this fundamental element of astrology. The speakers reflect on their individual journeys in understanding aspects, revealing that this comprehension often develops gradually over time. One participant articulates a newfound clarity regarding aspects that emerged only two years prior, suggesting that the learning process in astrology is both personal and collective. The conversation underscores the complexity of aspects, which are defined as the angular relationships between celestial bodies, thereby functioning as critical coordinates in the astrological chart. This mathematical underpinning highlights the necessity of a geometric perspective to fully grasp the implications of aspects in astrological practice. The discourse further delves into the historical significance of aspects, particularly through the lens of Hellenistic astrology, where aspects were conceptualized as the planets 'witnessing' one another's movements. This metaphor not only enriches the understanding of aspects but also frames them within a narrative context, suggesting that planets engage in a dialogue through their angular relations. As the speakers enumerate the five major aspects—conjunction, opposition, sextile, trine, and square—they provide detailed explanations of each, illustrating how they manifest in astrological interpretations. This segment of the conversation is particularly valuable for listeners seeking to deepen their understanding of how celestial configurations influence human experiences and personality traits. In concluding their discussion, the speakers examine the practical implications of aspects in astrological readings, emphasizing the significance of orbs—the ranges of influence that determine the effectiveness of planetary relationships. The dialogue reveals varying opinions on the size of orbs, with some advocating for wider ranges for outer planets, reflecting the dynamic nature of astrological practice where personal interpretation plays a vital role. The speakers' serious and straightforward tone throughout the episode ensures that the audience remains engaged while receiving a wealth of information on the essential role of aspects in astrology. This thoughtful examination not only educates listeners but also inspires a deeper appreciation for the intricate connections between celestial bodies.

Takeaways:

  • The comprehension of astrological aspects significantly deepens over the course of one's studies, often emerging after considerable engagement with the subject matter.
  • Astrological aspects are fundamentally geometric relationships that reflect the angular positions of celestial bodies relative to one another on the ecliptic.
  • There are five principal astrological aspects that practitioners utilize: conjunction, opposition, sextile, trine, and square, each possessing unique interpretative implications.
  • The concept of 'orb' refers to the range within which the influence of an aspect is felt, and this can vary depending on the specific astrological tradition or personal preference of the practitioner.
  • Understanding the conjunction as the most fundamental aspect is essential, as it occurs when two celestial bodies occupy the same degree or sign in the zodiac.
  • The interpretative significance of aspects can vary greatly; for instance, the energy of planets can be influenced even when they are at a distance, as long as they remain within an appropriate orb of influence.

Speaker A:

How far into your studies do you think y' all got to aspects?

Speaker B:

Honestly, for me, it kind of started happening maybe like two years ago.

Speaker C:

Really only two years?

Speaker B:

I mean I, I always knew about aspects, but like, I'm talking about like now I see an aspect and I understand it with like a lot more like in depth.

Speaker B:

Like I, I get it now.

Speaker B:

I get what they're doing.

Speaker B:

They're.

Speaker B:

I see it more as like exactly what aspects or configurations mean.

Speaker B:

You know, it's like they witness something.

Speaker B:

Planets are witnessing each other do something.

Speaker B:

Wait, wait, no, no, I'm getting ahead, I'm getting ahead.

Speaker A:

How far?

Speaker A:

How long?

Speaker A:

Well, well, you know, we all start trying to figure out what's this lines in the middle of the chart.

Speaker C:

Those are the aspects.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I know, but I'm saying in the beginning we'd be looking.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's what we're trying to figure out.

Speaker A:

Yeah, so.

Speaker B:

So it's geometry.

Speaker B:

Geometry, baby.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So when, when we begin.

Speaker A:

When you begin learning astrology, you come to find out that the first step went with the second step, goes with the third step.

Speaker A:

And to be able to get to step four, you have to incorporate step one, two, three.

Speaker A:

One of the steps you will get to on your journey and studying your chart is the astrological aspects.

Speaker A:

What is that?

Speaker A:

Well, the dictionary definition is a particular status or phase in which something appears or may be regarded.

Speaker A:

Astrologically speaking.

Speaker A:

An aspect is an angular relationship measured in degrees of longitude between planets and points along the ecliptic.

Speaker A:

This is also known as the doctrine of configuration.

Speaker A:

Hellenistic astrologers called it.

Speaker A:

What?

Speaker A:

Walter?

Speaker B:

They called it to bear witness to something.

Speaker B:

They actually called it a vision.

Speaker B:

Like the planets are, are seeing each other.

Speaker B:

They're interacting in a visionary way.

Speaker A:

And giving testimony.

Speaker B:

Yes, giving testimony, exactly.

Speaker B:

To give evidence, to bear testimony.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Simply put, aspects of the geometric patterns form between signs relative to their positions on the circle.

Speaker A:

There are five major configurations or aspects that can be used.

Speaker A:

Aspects can be used by degrees or sign based aspects.

Speaker A:

The five major aspects are.

Speaker A:

Anybody?

Speaker A:

Anybody?

Speaker C:

Conjunction or co presence, the opposition, sextile, trine square.

Speaker C:

Is that all of them?

Speaker A:

Yes, yes, that's the five main one majors.

Speaker A:

Or.

Speaker A:

What's the P word?

Speaker A:

Ptolemy.

Speaker B:

Oh, Ptolemy.

Speaker C:

The, the.

Speaker B:

The Ptolemaic aspects.

Speaker A:

The Ptolemaic aspects.

Speaker A:

Thank you, Walter, for the assistance.

Speaker B:

And I, I actually, I actually want to point out that if you guys go back to maybe like middle school math, if anybody remembers trigonometry, sine, cosine, tangent, that that's really where you get the degrees from that actually will, you know, give you the aspects.

Speaker A:

Aspects as vision.

Speaker A:

I think this is what you talk about to affirm that one has seen or heard or experienced something or that he knows it because taught by divine inspiration.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker A:

So aspects is looked at as a planet's ability to see.

Speaker A:

Ability or inability to see each other.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

The first aspect to.

Speaker A:

Actually, the easiest and first aspect to understand would be the conjunction.

Speaker B:

Which occurs when two planets are in the same sign or when two planets occupy or are close to occupying the same degree of the zodiac.

Speaker A:

Thank you, Walter, for that.

Speaker A:

Depending on what type of astrology you follow, orbs play a manner.

Speaker A:

You know, what is an orb?

Speaker B:

An orb?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Anybody?

Speaker B:

Basically, yeah, go ahead, D. Take this one away.

Speaker C:

It's like.

Speaker C:

Okay, so like your son, let's say, is at 10 degrees cancer.

Speaker C:

So the orb would be like the planet is conjunct if it's within, let's say, 5 degrees of that sun.

Speaker C:

So either up to 15 degrees or as low as 5 degrees.

Speaker B:

I like to think of the orb as like a range, like a little.

Speaker C:

It's in its bubble.

Speaker C:

You're in my personal space.

Speaker C:

This is my bubble.

Speaker C:

You're in my bubble.

Speaker A:

The technical definition of an orb would be.

Speaker A:

Is a range of influence in which an aspect or configuration.

Speaker A:

Configuration between two planets is thought to.

Speaker A:

To be able to effect each other.

Speaker A:

Orb is really short for orb of influence, which is how far the energy extends.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

So if two planets are by degree, really far away, the impact or like the influence of their energy is not as potent as if they were very, very close in terms of like, degrees or even sign.

Speaker A:

Yeah, but.

Speaker A:

Or degrees vary depending on what school of thought you follow.

Speaker A:

You know, but on the average.

Speaker B:

Or personal.

Speaker B:

Or personal preference, I would say as well.

Speaker A:

Yes, yes.

Speaker A:

Do you.

Speaker A:

Well, the standard is in between 8 to 5 for everything other than the sun and moon.

Speaker A:

The sun and moon, which would have wider orbs up about 10.

Speaker A:

I think the sun and moon is about 10 degrees.

Speaker A:

Orbs.

Speaker B:

Even though I. I heard up a podcast by Richard Tarnas once, and he says that he even goes as far as 15, especially with the outer planets, because it's.

Speaker C:

Because they move so slow.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And also because when you get to like 15 with the outer planets, like, it's almost like an event is gonna occur.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

15 Degrees.

Speaker B:

Like, the event is really far away from occurring, but it's.

Speaker B:

The energy is already like in the vicinity, kind of like prepping.

Speaker B:

Like this is going.

Speaker B:

This may happen.

Speaker B:

This is probably going to happen as it gets closer and closer.

Speaker B:

And closer boom occurs.

Speaker C:

Yeah, like they're.

Speaker C:

They're.

Speaker C:

They're not at your house yet, but they.

Speaker C:

Down the street around the corner.

Speaker B:

Yes, yes, exactly.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

So you don't buy into the co present idea?

Speaker B:

I do.

Speaker B:

I do.

Speaker C:

The co president.

Speaker C:

What?

Speaker A:

As in a planet at.

Speaker A:

Let's just say 1 degree cancer and a planet at 29 degree cancer co present would mean they do have an influence on each other.

Speaker A:

But if you go by degree base or base, they say, hey, they too far from each other.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's a bit far for me.

Speaker C:

But I get what you're saying.

Speaker C:

Like, to me, that's more of like they were conjunct at one point, but they're already down the street and over.

Speaker C:

They're already like.

Speaker C:

They're still like, they.

Speaker C:

They're just getting out of your neighborhood.

Speaker C:

Like, bye.

Speaker A:

Well.

Speaker A:

Well, the way he kind of.

Speaker A:

They kind of say it is.

Speaker A:

Imagine you're in a big house.

Speaker A:

Say you're in a mansion.

Speaker C:

In a mansion.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Mansion of cancer.

Speaker A:

No, just.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And you.

Speaker A:

And you are in.

Speaker A:

You at one end of the house and another person's at the other end of the house.

Speaker A:

Even though they.

Speaker A:

Y' all two may not bump into each other.

Speaker A:

Y' all know each other's present is there.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

It's got to be a big house, though.

Speaker C:

That's someone at the front door.

Speaker C:

Someone way at the back door.

Speaker A:

Well, I mean, you know, don't have to be that big.

Speaker A:

I mean, if you have an upstairs, downstairs.

Speaker A:

I mean, you could, you know, you.

Speaker B:

Could be in the kitchen and somebody in the upstairs bathroom.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

That would be co.

Speaker A:

Present.

Speaker A:

But the conjunction is.

PAUL HEATH

I am Paul. When I reflect back on my life, I was always interested in astrology. I would read my daily horoscope in the newspaper every day and often wonder, “how do they know?”
One day I was told I am a “cusp of beauty”, because my birthday was the last day of Virgo. I went home to research what cusp of beauty meant. My curiosity soared when finding out the meaning. I didn’t realize that I had just begun the journey of “Know Thyself.”
Learning how to read my natal chart I acquired the skills to assist others with deciphering their own chart-energy. Astrology has helped me understand and accept me for who I am. Although still work in progress, knowing about myself is surely making the process easier. I enjoy helping others (Virgo Sun) with the information I have gathered (Gemini Rising) that will help transform lives (Scorpio Moon) in a positive way.
I look forward to meeting and working with you as we embark on your journey.
